Panerai reveals new attractions

At the 2015 edition of Watches and Wonders, Swiss manufacture Officine Panerai wowed visitors with an array of special new watches.

Now in its third edition, the annual Asian exhibition of haute horlogerie was held at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre from September 30 to October 3.

At the event, Panerai showcased the new Radiomir 1940 in steel or red gold, the Radiomir 1940 3 Days Automatic, the Radiomir 1940 10 Days GMT Automatic, the Radiomir 1940 Tourbillon GMT Oro Rosso – 48 mm, and the Luminor 1950 3 Days Titanio DLC, as well as two new table clocks.

RADIOMIR 1940 3 DAYS: Panerai’s calibre P.1000, a new hand-wound movement with a power reserve of three days, powers the new Radiomir 1940 3 Days, available in steel or red gold with a diameter of 42 mm.

Entirely made at Panerai’s manufacture in Neuchatel, the P.1000 is a very solid movement with a large brush-finished bridge covering the major part of the wheelwork and a bridge with two supports firmly holding the balance, which oscillates at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour). The case is water-resistant to 10 bar (about 100 m) in the polished AISI 316L stainless steel version and to 5 bar (about 50 m) in the gold version.

The sapphire crystal of the porthole on the back of the watch enables the P.1000 movement to be admired while the polished bezel frames the classic Panerai black dial, with large bar markers and figures. In the steel model (PAM00574) the alligator strap is co-ordinated with the light green of the Super-LumiNova, while the model in red gold (PAM00575) is supplied with a black alligator strap.

RADIOMIR 1940 3 DAYS AUTOMATIC: The Radiomir 1940 3 Days Automatic (PAM00620) is the first automatic watch in the Radiomir 1940 collection presented in the 42-mm size. Driven by the calibre P.4000, with its oscillating weight mounted off-centre and integrated in the movement, the new watch is supplied with a black alligator strap with contrasting ecru stitching.

RADIOMIR 1940 10 DAYS GMT AUTOMATIC: This model comes in two new special editions in which the Radiomir 1940 design is for the first time combined with the P.2003/10 movement, the automatic calibre with date.

The P.2003/10 is the first skeletonised automatic movement from Panerai. With three spring barrels which offer a power reserve of ten days, the movement has 25 jewels and a balance which makes 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz).

The main functions are hours, minutes, small seconds, date and linear indication of the remaining power reserve at 6 o’clock.

The Radiomir 1940 10 Days GMT Automatic is available with a brown dial and alligator strap in brown (PAM00624) or in black (PAM00625). Both models are water-resistant to 5 bar.

RADIOMIR 1940 TOURBILLON GMT ORO ROSSO – 48 MM: This model is Panerai’s most recent creation in the “Lo Scienziato” range. Produced in a limited edition of 30 units, the Radiomir 1940 Tourbillon GMT (PAM00559) comes with a black alligator strap and a polished red gold folding buckle. Like all Panerai watches, even the most valuable and sophisticated, the new model is water-resistant, in this case to 5 bar.

LUMINOR 1950 3 DAYS TITANIO DLC: These are two special editions, limited to 300 pieces each. The number “1950” refers to the year when the case with the iconic lever device protecting the winding crown was designed by Panerai to make the watch worn by the commandos of the Italian Navy stronger and more water-resistant. The proportions of this historic case were not reproduced by Panerai until 2002, when the first Luminor 1950 (PAM00127) was launched.

The first models of the modern era to be fitted with the lever device, from 1993, have a slightly revised design, which today identifies the Luminor collection.

On these new models, the date “1950” is engraved on the lever locking the winding crown. The case is made of titanium coated with DLC (diamond-like carbon) and it is 47 mm in diameter, like the vintage models.

One version (PAM00617) has a black dial with the classic Panerai design, with large bar markers and figures, and the seconds counter at 9 o’clock. By contrast, the other (PAM00629) has a black dial with a combination of Roman and Arabic numerals and graphic markers. The movement of the Luminor 1950 Days Titanio DLC is the P.3000, hand-wound with a power reserve of three days and the watch is water-resistant to 10 bar.
